SEMINARS

Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation
Fall 2021 — Present

Seminars and workshops are presented to second-year WUDPAC students on a wide range of topics including treatment techniques, material identification, and other preservation practices. These seminars provide a forum for discussing relevant literature and provide strong practical experience by allowing students to experiment with different techniques and materials. Specific seminars I participated in related to my photograph major and paper minor are shared below along with images highlighting some activities.

SURFACE CLEANING

Lead by Debbie Hess Norris

Dry and wet surface cleaning techniques were tested on a variety of photographic prints including an albumen, silver gelatin DOP, matte collodion, and silver gelatin POP photographs. After testing, preferred techniques were selected to clean larger areas of the photographs and to inform treatment decisions to overall surface clean larger photographs of the same processes and their mounts.

HUMIDIFICATION & FLATTENING

Lead by Zach Long, Conservator, CCAHA

Seminar focused on the humidifcation and flattening of two tightly rolled panoramas from the WUDPAC Study Collection, one large and one small. Set up the large chamber in the sink filled with a small layer of water. Placed prints on top of hollytex and egg crates with weights on each side of print so that they wouldn’t roll during humidifcation. Placed prints in chamber at 11am and finally removed the large panorama after 6 hours . After treatment, placed both prints face-down on blotter and hollytex stack and set under glass weights.
